English Dub Review: Helck “The Unknown Enemy”

OVERVIEW (SPOILERS)

After a nice home cooked meal by Helck, the finalists for the Demon Lord tournament head into the territory invaded by the winged warriors. Helck easily defeats all monstrous enemies in their way, but the warriors surprise the demons by cutting off one of their arms.

OUR TAKE

Well, we’re on week three of talking about this show and I still don’t have a helck of a lot to say. Did I already make that joke? If so, it kinda proves my point. Helck is great, Vermillio doubts him, he keeps proving he’s the exact opposite of what she thought, rinse and repeat. She’s a text book tsundere up against a giant slab of wholesome beef, so no doubt the end point of this whole thing is her falling for him. Frankly, it would be more shocking if Helck DID turn out to be actually doing this all as a ruse to destroy demons from the inside. And they’re still working on this tournament and fighting off the invaders in this castle, so that is also something that I don’t have a whole lot more to say about. None of the other remaining finalists are very interesting either, with some of the blandest designs I’ve seen in awhile, so I’m basically just waiting for them to get killed off or leave. This whole first arc is, simply put, not very fun or interesting to watch, with the visuals not helping and the voice acting kinda hurting it, Vermillio especially. Like shit, I’ve got twenty one more episodes of this to go?

Also can’t help but notice that we’re three episodes in and we still haven’t gotten a ton about Helck from Helck himself. We got some hints at his backstory and motives in the first episode but they’ve kinda been lost by the way side since then. We’ve still got plenty of time to get into it but its absence is getting increasingly noticeable, and really shouldn’t be taking this long in the first place. The show’s called Helck, so tell me about Helck! Why does Helck want to help demons? Why does he hate humans? Why does he want to rule over demons? This whole tournament is apparently going to end next episode when they finish fighting off all these winged people, so maybe we’ll get some insight into all of that then. And best of all, maybe we’ll finally get something here that I can actually talk about in detail besides the same shit I’ve already reiterated three times now! Wouldn’t that be great? Are we at four hundred words yet? Okay, hang on, looks like we still have a little bit left go here. Aaaaaaaand done!
