English Dub Review: Delicious in Dungeon “Harpy/Chimera”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

The parties must band together to fend off an attack by vicious Harpies—but the unexpected appearance of a transformed Falin stuns everyone.

Our Take:

Laios’ party met up with their old acquaintance, Shuro, but the reunion was far from a pleasant feast. Laios and his team are now in danger of being executed if it is discovered that they used black magic to revive Falin. Adding to their troubles, Falin’s condition continues deteriorating due to the effects of Marcille’s black magic. Usually, hunting and consuming monsters alleviates their worries, but in this case, it is not a viable solution.

The episode takes the series in another dramatic turn as Laios and Shuro’s relationship is now tested when Laios tells him about Falin’s condition. Things also get worse when a group of Harpies ambush the parties, but that’s not the only monster giving them a hard time. They also come across a chimera-shaped Falin that combines the Red Dragon meat with dark magic, much to everyone’s surprise. However, Shuro got hit the hardest not only due to Laios’ team using black magic on her but also his undeniable love for her, further revealed by his proposal to her. Unsurprisingly, the parties were no match for Falin’s profound strength and spells, as most of the members were either critically injured or murdered by her. While the members were revived later on thanks to Marcille’s magic, it still proves how unstable and powerful Falin has become due to the black magic and the Mad Mage’s control over the dungeon monsters.

There are still some monster food and comical moments involved in this dramatic and violent episode, mainly the tamagoyaki made from the Harpy eggs. However, the real attention-grabber is the relationship between Laios and Shuro regarding their thoughts on how to deal with the situation. While Shuro believes it’s best to report Falin’s condition to the surface, Laios thinks the only way to save Falin is to defeat the Mad Mage. Of course, Laios’ party stays behind to find the Mad Mage while the rest of the groups return to the surface. Was it wise to handle the big bad themselves without any backup? We’ll have to wait and see. “Harpy/Chimera” is another enticing episode that shouldn’t work due to its balance of slapstick and character drama, but it wound up being a delectable cohesive surprise instead. With Laios’ plan set in motion, the quest to find the Mad Mage begins.
